Will Be

The toilet paper is kept in a cupboard that is high on the wall, out of the reach of my children’s fingers. So, each time I go in, I pull down another roll, knowing that it’s not needed yet, but will be.

The jug that is slow to clean the water we fill it with, finds its way to my hand more often than I use it. I stand with the tap gushing, waiting for it to be full, knowing that it’s not needed now, but will be.

The cartons of juice that live by the front door at the opposite side of the house, the ones they’ll want later but won’t be bothered to get. As my feet walk the circular path there and back to bring them within their grasp, not needed now, but will be.

The clothes that my hands fold, place in drawers and hang on your rails. The ones that only hours ago were draped on furniture and soaking up water left on the bathroom floor, now dried and ready for you once more, not yet needed, but will be.

The foods that arrive at the door, always on time so we never run out. The snacks that you grab and stuff in your bag as you hurry out, the meals that bring you comfort and nourish you, not needed now, but will be.

The books that will match your mood. The ones you will see the beauty of yourself reflected in. Those that will allow you to travel many lives and experiences, all filling the shelves, not yet needed, but will be.

In each of these ways and countless more I am not asked for, but I am here anyway and always will be. Needed in all the subtle ways my hands find to love you.
